Back to work
3:47 PM on Feb. 22, 2008

I am so happy that I was finally able to go back to work yesterday for the first time since around Thanksgiving!  I have been home recouperating from a broken leg (stress fracture of the head my tibia- around the knee).  I am no longer using crutches but am now using a quad cane. I was getting very fast with the crutches but am now back to being as slow as a turtle since I can now bear weight on my leg.  I am back to work at the park district on restricted duty but I am so happy to be back to being with all of my friends. :) i am only working a few days a week, but I am happy to just be back to work again.  I was so worn out, but happy!

Also, in the future if you are debating whether to open the door or offer help to someone with a disability.  Do offer it.  If they do not need it, they will tell you thank you for the offer and not feel offended.  It is so hard for me to get around, try to carry anything and open those heavy doors to get into buildings while walking around on crutches and/or a cane.  I could open the door and hold the door open with the crutch, but it is not as easy with this cane.  Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hope you're much better now and thanks for the reminder! :) Holding doors open is second nature to me. My parents drummed it into me to be courteous to other people. Even if you weren't on crutches or had a cane, I still would. What's sad is some people won't even say thanks or bark at you that they can manage fine on their own. I tried to teach my son good manners from a young age but explaining to a child why you do something polite when it's repaid with rudeness or not even acknowledged ain't easy. Seeing his face fall when someone waltzed through a door he was holding for them without even a glance at him was a sad sight.

Congrats! It is no fun to be down and out for a long period of time. It must feel really great to get back to work. As far as helpgin out people with disabilities I couldn't agree more. My mom has multiple sclerosis and will gladly accept any help she can get.

Sorry to hear about your accident, but that's great that you are recovering !! !

I usually always offer to help someone with a disability. If they turn me down or are nasty about, then so be it. I know that I was doing it to be helpful. More often than not though, people are grateful for a little bit of help here and there.
