Question for today: Your Dream Job
3:36 PM on Apr. 26, 2008

If you could wake up tomorrow and someone handed you the job of your dreams on a plate, what would it be? Where would it be? What would it entail? Why would you choose that?

Oh , I know, that was four questions but that's my writers block smasher for today. No restrictions, no if's or but's, dream as high as you like! Let's hear those career aspirations. :)

"Find a job you like and you add five days to every week." -H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

This is easy, I would want to be a writer. I'm talking fiction. No more stupid articles or other paid gigs I have to do to scrape up some money. Novels. Books. And no proposal-rejection games, I want my novels written and published and read. I want to unlock that cellar wher all my creative ideas go and let them out. Will it ever happen? Who knows. I like tricking myself into thinking that it will.

Nugget, remember us all when you're rich and famous! :) What kind of movie genre are you thinking of working in or do you not really mind, as long as you're involved in some way? That sounds like such a fascinating industry to be in. Is your uni course geared towards that? I'm not sure if it's Northern Ireland you're in, but this BBC page on filmmaking funding might be of interest to you. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/filmnetwork/filmmakersgui

University College Cork has some info too: http://www.ucc.ie/en/CollegesandDepartments/ArtsCe

Always handy to have information I reckon because you never know when opportunity will knock. Hope that helps. :)

xiflada, I think that's a great job to aim for. It would be wonderful to know that you've had some kind of influence on another person's life in a positive manner and I think teaching's one of the main ways to achieve that. Have you looked into what the entry requirements are for teacher training these days? While it might not be practical right now to train, it doesn't mean you can't keep in mind what's needed. Things change all the time. :)

cirereyes, this is a dream job, remember? No obstacles allowed. :) Does your business course training take you a step closer to either the Electronics or programmer jobs? It could be they're not as far away as you think. I find that when I change my mindset from " I don't/can't" to " I want to/will/can/will strive to", that good things start happening to help me find a way forward. :)

Leighdu, sounds like you want to be a researcher. For me I always wanted to be an Electronics and communications Engineer or a computer programmer, but even if they will offer it to me right now I wouldn't take the offer. I'm already a business course graduate and I'm not fit to be in that job.

Oooo, good answer, leighdu! I love learning about different cultures and people too. That would be fantastic. I'm trying to think how that could be combined into a job. Hmm, maybe you could be a travel reviewer! Then you'd get to see the world and someone else would pay for it. I have an aunt that does something similar - she goes all over the world as a representative of the travel agency she works for to test out airlines, resorts and hotels they use and make sure they're up to scratch and being represented properly in their brochures. It's like a global mystery shopper job. She does speak seven languages fluently though and is in double figure with the ones she can get by on fairly well, so I think anyone looking to work in that kind of arena would need to start there first.

But heck, we're fantasizing and don't need money! I'm packing my backpack and waiting at the end of my drive to hitch a lift with you. :)

This may seem to be a little odd to some that don't like school, and I don't even know if this would be considered a job, but I would love to be a professional student :-). I don't want to be a teacher, but if I had the option just to get an education by traveling and learning about every culture out there, and having the time just to take classes and learn about whatever interests me no matter what the cost, then that's what I would choose.
