Learning the Piano.. Sort of...

I just got hold of this piano. Strike that, not a piano but those cheap keyboards you see everywhere. Still it's like having a new toy, I just jumped right into it. I've always wanted to learn to play the piano and perhaps one day when I have more time I'll really learn it but for now I'm just trying to learn songs. Right now I'm trying to follow this guy play The Piano Man by Billy Joel - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9Mhy1KmC04 It's crazy considering I haven't touched a piano but this is just one excellent song. It's already breaking my fingers but what the heck!

Congrats of getting a piano! As to learning to play, it is all about having a good teacher. I took piano lessons as a kid, and never got anything out of it except learning to hate the instrument. The teacher had this "classic" approach and taught me to read music and play all kinds of difficult music while all I wanted to do was get the feel of the music and learn to play by ear. Never happened.

I'm terrible with drums. I believe it's one of those things that you're either naturally good at or just plain bad at. The only instrument I'm decent at is the guitar and it actually helps with understanding how the piano works, with the chords, the keys and all that.

That is so cool that you are learning to play the piano/keyboard. So far, all of my kids display some kind of musical talent and I'd venture to say most of it came from my wife. LOL. I tease her and tell her that I can play the kazoo. I can also sing tenor...that is...ten or twenty miles away from people so they can't hear me. LOL

Heh, only instruments I can play are drums, xylophones, and flutes, and I'm rubbish at all of them.

Having some musical talent can make you the life of the party, nothing beats good live music.
