My 45th Birthday
8:42 PM on Mar. 5, 2008

Today was my 45th birthday; I spent most of it trying to cope with PC-related issues because this morning my eMachines T-5048 was acting up so much that I decided to use a new Vista computer I bought as a backup so I wouldn't miss one day of work or be out of touch with my online friends for longer than absolutely necessary. The setting-up part was easier than I thought it would be, but the PC didn't come with speakers, so I had to order a set from Amazon, since I can't stand to wear the ear buds I'm now using for long periods of time.  (As far as I can tell, I can only hear sound from one bud, so yeah, I'll be needing speakers ASAP.)

Vista, by the way, is a nice system if you're an experienced Windows user, but I've only been using it for a few hours, so I can't say if it's better than Windows XP yet.  It's graphically niftier in some ways, but it is so radically different from XP that it'll be a good while before I'm comfortable with it.

Anyway, not much besides the PC stuff happened today; Mom is still sick and not really in the best of spirits, so we didn't do anything different for the Day, as it were.  My sister came by and said hello and gave me a card with $40.00, and Mom got me Season 3 of 24 on DVD...actually, she told me to order something from Amazon that was less than $50, so I chose the DVDs....A few of my online buds chimed in to say "Happy Birthday," and that was awesome.

I heard a rumor that they would be replacing Vista soon with a Windows 9 or something like that ? Not sure how true it is, but if it is hopefully it will have better reviews than Vista. Scribbler, I am still a big XP fan too. I just think it sucks how they keep updgrading to new versions.

A belated Happy Birthday wish to you, Fardreamer! How are you finding Vista now you've spent a bit more time on it? I don't think I'd like it because my computer gets used a lot for gaming by my son as well as everything else. I'd break my heart to think of all the money spent on games that couldn't be used anymore. Why Microsoft want to dump XP in favor of it, I don't understand at all since it seemed people were pretty happy with XP. Maybe you know more about that and can enlighten me. :) Sometimes I think it's just change for the sake of change in corporations.

Aside from the hateful "my old games are now obsolete" issue, I have to say I'm now, more or less, used to Vista's look and "feel." Now I'm waiting on a friend of mine to let me install a copy of Office 2007. It's not a bad OS, really, but I really hate to think I've got to throw out most of my entertainment software. Not that it gets much use...but still, it was a diversion I sorely need from time to time.

Well, it looks like I am going to be needing a new pc . Mine is freezing a lot and I'm having problems with spyware that just won't go away. So I will probably be using Vista sooner than I wanted to.

I think it's the fact that Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, didn't think about compatibility issues that would crop up with Windows-based software, both in business apps as well as games. All my games were written with Windows 98, Millennium, or XP in mind, so naturally some are going to have tons of problems running on Vista.

On the plus side, you'd probably like some of the new Vista features.....

A bit off topic, but can anyone tell me exactly why they don't like Vista? From I have heard from others is that it doesn't run well with business applications, and that would be a big problem for me.

Belated Happy Birthday! Good for you, sounds like you gave yourself a gift for your birthday. Windows Vista is good, but you have to complete the updates for it and there are only a few games that can run smoothly on Vista.

Thanks, leighdu, for the kind birthday comment.

If the new PC had been a gift, yep...it would have been a swell one. Unfortunately, I had been noticing that my PC was having issues with a few apps...games mostly but some other maintenance-related ones as well and decided to have at least a standby tower just in case the T-5048 broke....I'm sure it is not "broken," but I just don't have the savvy to solve the issues myself and not patient enough to wait for help....soooooo.....

Happy Belated birthday ! Hey, a new pc sounds like a pretty good b-day present, but I guess not as good if you had to buy it yourself huh?

I'm still on Windows XP and am not looking forward to switching to Vista. My favorite is STILL 98SE, and my old pc with 98SE goes twice as fast as my newer one.

Thanks, Tomoko and musiclover for the birthday comments, belated or otherwise. I appreciate them a great deal.

About Tomoko's PC....wow, Windows 98? I can't even remember how that one looks. Vista looks so different from the other versions of Windows; it's nice...but it does have its weak points, such as some XP programs not fully compatible with it and what not.

Happy Belated Birthday! Sorry you were dealing with computer problems for most of the day. Sounds like the day ended well for you, though.
I don't know much about computers, but my husband has been having a lot of problems with Windows Vista. Not sure why, but he has been complaining about it lately!

Happy Birthday, Alex, sounds nice you're using the new Vista computer, Actually I 've been using the old Windows 98 past 8 years, so I consider to buy new one before it will break down.. Whatever I need to look a few sorts of ones.
